Newark & Sherwood manager Romaine Graham praises goal-of-the-season contender from Louie Jarvis in FA Vase win - but will it be beaten?

Romaine Graham isn’t convinced Newark & Sherwood can crown their goal-of-the-season winner just yet.

Right-back Louie Jarvis lit up the Highwaymen’s 4-2 FA Vase victory at Radford on Saturday with a stunning 30-yard half-volley that flew in off the post.

It was a special strike but there could be even better to come, according to boss Graham.

He said: “It was a bit of worldie. He hit one in pre-season from a bit further out, so I guess it’s sat up nicely for him and he’s thought why not?

“It was a great strike but I think someone can beat it, to be honest.

“It’ll definitely be up there at the end of the season but Kieran Cummings has a got a bit of magic in him and Luke White and Toby White can both strike a ball from range.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if it got beat but what a strike.”

Cummings gave Newark a seventh-minute lead in the second qualifying round tie and Jamie Goddard restored the lead before the hour mark after Radford levelled.

A mistake gifted the hosts their second equaliser but Jarvis’ wonder goal made it 3-2 with 10 minutes left and Kameron Campbell added an injury-time penalty.

“It was a difficult game,” said Graham. “Radford’s a hard place to go. It was more of a battle so we just had to show another side to us and then our quality shone through at the end.”

Graham was out even earlier than usual for the second half, having said his piece as the sides went in level at 1-1.

He added: “I didn’t have too much to say. I put a rocket up them, basically.

“I tend to let the players talk amongst themselves anyway. That’s my thing. I’ll have my say and then hand it over to them.

“I probably was out a bit earlier than normal on Saturday, having had a few choice words.

“As a player and as a team, sometimes you’ve got to work things out for yourselves.

“When I do my team-talk, I always say, ‘What do you guys think?’ I like them to have a voice.

“As a player, it’s something I’d appreciate and that’s when you expect your skipper, your vice-skipper and your leaders to step up and take the floor.”

Newark & Sherwood have drawn Clay Cross at home in the first round proper, with the tie to be played on October 19.

Cross play a league below but have former Nottingham Forest forward Nathan Tyson in their ranks.

“That’s a tricky draw,” said Graham. “They’re top of their league - it’ll be a really tough challenge.

“I believe they’ve got some really good players, including Nathan Tyson.

“Every season there’s a club in the league below that should be playing in the league above and they put a lot of money in, and I think it’s them this year.”

Newark & Sherwood visit Belper in United Counties Premier Division North this Saturday (3pm) and host Kimberley Miners Welfare on Tuesday (7.45pm).
